Marilynne Robinson

Home by Marilynne Robinson is #2 in the Gilead series. It is a stand-alone although it contains the same characters as those in Gilead. The novel is told from the perspective of Glory, the thirty-eight-year-old woman who has returned to Gilead to take care of her dying father. She is joined by her prodigal brother, Jack, whom the family has not heard of for twenty years.

The narrative consists of Glory’s flashbacks of her childhood; her conversations with Jack; her tender care-giving of her father; her attempts to nurture healing and reconciliation between friends and family; and extensive discussions about faith and the role it plays in our lives.

A very moving portrayal of unconditional love, familial relations, regrets, and forgiveness. Just as is the case with Gilead, this novel should be read slowly and savored.
